West Noble Teacher Passes After Life Support Terminated
Friday, August 23, 2019

FORT WAYNE – West Noble High School teacher and former coach Chuck Schlemmer died Wednesday evening after being removed from life support.

Schlemmer lost all brain activity after being struck by an alleged drunk driver last Friday as he was bicycling.

His son, Zack, posted on the family’s Go Fund Me page that none of his organs could be donated because he lived beyond 90 minutes after being removed from life support. Ironically, his heart was in such good shape that he could not donate it.

However tissue donation was possible, meaning his skin, bones, ligaments, corneas and heart valves could all be donated.

The Go Fund Me drive has raised more than 18-thousand dollars so far and the family raised the goal to 25-thousand. Any excess not needed for medical and funeral expenses will be used to establish a scholarship account in Schlemmer’s name. The page can be found at go-fund-me-dot-com by searching for Team Schlem.

45-year-old Ryan Gravit of Lagrange is charged with a Level-4 felony count of Operating While Intoxicated causing serious body injury within 5 years of a prior conviction, and a Level-3 felony of leaving the scene of an accident. His bail was set at $250-thousand dollars.
