Garrett High School Construction Trades Program Receives SEAL Certification
Wednesday, August 28, 2019

Garrett High School is the latest addition to the growing list of entities to earn a State Earn and Learn certification from the Indiana
Department of Workforce Development.

The Department of Workforce Development is helping to skill-up the state's workforce by offering SEAL certificates to employers and high schools. Garrett High School's certificate is for the Construction Trades program. SEAL's are structured, scalable programs ranging from eight week to two years in length and include certifications tailored for any sector. They are designed to meet the
skills that employers demand, are geared toward both adult and youth populations. And satisfy Indiana's new graduation pathway requirements. It will give students at Garrett High School the opportunity to earn industry-valued credentials while participating in paid on-the-job training. The construction trades program at Garrett has been in existence for more than 40 years and recently expanded to include career development. The program starts at fifth grade and continues
through 12th grade. Now, with the SEAL certificate, the program is expected to draw 35-40 students in each class over the next few years.

THE DWD projects Indiana employers will need to fill 1 million jobs in the next 10 years, half of which will not require a four year college degree, but some type of certification or credential beyond a high school diploma.
