Man Arrested Following Police Chase Enters Plea
Friday, August 30, 2019

A man arrested following a two county police chase has entered into a plea agreement.

Branch County Circuit Court personnel say 36 year old Joseph Copas of
Burlington entered no contest pleas to charges of fourth degree fleeing and eluding, concealing stolen property and operating while license suspended. Several other charges including assault, robbery and two counts of motor vehicle theft were dismissed by the Branch County Prosecutors Office.

Michigan State Police had been searching for Copas regarding several felony warrants, but had not been able to locate him. Troopers were investigating a tip on July 14 when they spotted Copas in Calhoun County. Officers pursued Copas into Branch County's Butler Township. He abandoned
the vehicle he was driving in a tree line, and attempted to rob an elderly woman, demanding the keys to her vehicle. Copas then fled to another nearby residence and tried to steal a van that was parked in the driveway when he was confronted by troopers.

After a brief fight, Copas was arrested. Copas will be sentenced October 14. He is also facing charges in Calhoun County.
