Preliminary Agreement Reached By UAW and GM
Thursday, October 17, 2019

General Motors and the United Autoworkers Union made great strides on Wednesday, as both sides are one step closer to getting 49,000 workers back in the factories after a tentative agreement was reached late on Tuesday.

Four weeks into picketing General Motors, strikers at the Fort Wayne Truck Assembly are excited at news by a new contract might be reached soon, but they are also remaining cautious until they know for sure.

Meanwhile, until the new contract is official, the workers will continue to picket as if nothing has changed. Not much is known about the contents of the agreement but throughout the process GM has offered up billions in factory improvements as well as jobs for workers affected by factory closings, but the UAW has their own list of things they’d like to see in the contract.

The union’s International Executive Board voted on the contract Wednesday, while union leaders will have their vote in Detroit coming up today and then it will go to the union members for ratification. The earliest strikers might return to work is on Thursday, but this process can take a couple of days.
