Contested Races In Branch County Primaries Tuesday
By: Mike Stiles - Monday, August 3, 2020

COLDWATER, MI – There will be three contested primary races Tuesday for Republicans in Branch County.

In the race for the Republican nomination for Branch County Sheriff, incumbent John Pollack is being challenged by Johnny Lopez, who formally was the Police Chief of Quincy. In 2012, Pollack defeated Lopez in the General Election, when Lopez was a Democratic candidate. Pollack is hoping to win a third term as Branch County Sheriff.
Former Prosecutor Terri Norris is looking to hold that position again, as she squares off against Zachary Stempien in the Republican primary. Stempien is serving as the Chief Assistant Prosecutor. He announced his candidacy when Prosecutor Val White decided not to run for a full term.

Norris was first elected Prosecutor in 2008. After leaving office she served as a defense attorney for a Union City law firm and has been a Branch County Commissioner.
In the race for Branch County Treasurer, Steve Rutz and Julie Waterbury are both seeking the Republican nomination. They will look to take over for Ann Vrablic, who is retiring. Another name will be on the ballot, Jessica Miller. She can not hold the office after moving to St. Joseph County.

Running unopposed for the Republican nomination are Branch County Clerk Terry Kubasiak (coo-BAH-shick), Register of Deeds Nancy Hutchins, Drain Commissioner Mike Hard and Surveyor Ed Reed.
