Fire Protection Territory Could Increase Property Taxes for Fremont and Orland Area Residents

STEUBEN COUNTY, IN - A proposed fire protection territory could increase property taxes for Fremont in Orland area residents.

Two towns and four townships in Steuben County are holding a joint meeting and public hearing Thursday to discuss forming a fire protection territory.

The meeting stems from discussions centered around some people who believe there is a need for additional funding for fire protection. Proponents of the move think the communities could work together to spread out the burden of cost so the impact to taxpayers could be minimized. Some concerning opposition are questioning the anticipated tax increase for property owners that could be as much as 16% more for residents in the town of Fremont and Orland, as well adjacent rural residents within the township areas.

The Fremont Town Council, at the request of the Fremont Fire Department and other area fire departments, commissioned Baker Tilly Municipal Advisors, LLC, to undertake a study to determine the best course of action moving forward. The advisory firm has recommended creating a fire territory.

The Fremont Town Council, Orland Town Council, Clear Lake Township Board, Fremont Township Board, Jamestown Township Board and Millgrove Township Board will assemble at the Fremont Fire Station at 6 p.m. on Thursday for the joint session.

The meeting is open to the public.
