An early morning house fire claimed the life of two people.
The White Pigeon Fire Department was called to the 100 block of West Chicago Road near South Washington Street at 3 AM Tuesday for a house fire. Fire fighters called for mutual aid and the Constantine and Tri-Township Fire Departments arrived to help extinguish the blaze.
A pregnant woman and a seven year old boy were killed in the fire. According to White Pigeon Fire Chief Troy Andrews, they were on the second floor of the house and fire crews could not get to them. Seven other residents were taken to the hospital, and two of them are in critical condition. Two other people were able to get out of the house safely. A dog was also found dead in the house, while another was able to get out.
All total fire fighters say 13 people from multiple families lived in the house.
The Michigan State Police Fire Marshal is investigating the blaze. No cause for the fire has been determined.
Also assisting at the scene were the St. Joseph County Sheriff's Department, St. Joseph County Victims Services and the American Red Cross.
