Illinois Man Arrested on Fraud Charges

Wells County, IN -The Indiana State Police arrested a 60 year old man from Illinois Wednesday evening on two preliminary fraud-related charges following an investigation which began this past Monday in which a stolen social security number was allegedly used to obtain a vehicle loan.

An investigation conducted by Master Trooper Kurt Jack indicated on Monday, March 11, 2019 Charles J. McKee began the process of purchasing a vehicle priced at almost $48,000 from Hiday Motors in Bluffton by allegedly filling out the required application for a loan. Hiday Motors was later informed that the social security number provided by McKee on the application was fraudulent.

Additional investigation by Jack revealed the social security number purportedly used by McKee was issued to a person in Ottawa County, Michigan. McKee was taken into custody without incident Wednesday evening at approximately 4:50 p.m. as he was allegedly attempting to complete the final phases of the transaction at the dealership.

McKee was taken to and incarcerated in the Wells County Jail on charges of Defrauding a Financial Institution (Level 5 Felony) and Identity Theft (Level 6 Felony).

The Indiana State Police was assisted by Master Trooper Brian Walker, Master Trooper David Haines, Sergeant Shaun Armes, Detective Matt Teusch, Detective Shane Neuenschwander and the Wells County Prosecutor’s Office.
