Dekalb Area State Police Detective Promoted To Sergeant

On Monday, Indiana State Police Superintendent Douglas G. Carter announced the promotion of Detective Robert C. Smith III to the rank of Sergeant within the Field Investigation Section to serve as the Investigative Squad Leader for the Fort Wayne Post.

Smith is a native of Garrett, Indiana and a 1991 graduate of Garrett High School. He attended Vincennes University for two years and studied Criminal Justice before being hired as a Patrolman with the Kendallville Police Department. In 1997, Smith became a Deputy with the Noble County Sheriff Department and worked as one of their K-9 officers and 1999, he was awarded two Medals of Valor.

During his career, Smith has served as a member of the Tactical Intervention Platoon and he has been the recipient of two awards for exemplary service. In 2011, he was awarded the FBI Meritorious Achievement award in Washington, D.C. and in 2012, he was awarded the Indiana State Police Life Saving Award. Smith and his family are residents of rural Allen County.
