Corn planting in Indiana progressed significantly last week, with farmers taking advantage of the most days suitable for fieldwork thus far this season.
Farmers more than doubled the percentage of corn planted from 31 percent the week before to 67 percent at the end of last week. Last year 100% of corn was planted by this time.
Soybean planting also made significant strides last week, from 17% to 42%, though both still lagged behind the previous year and five-year averages. Winter wheat conditions remained mostly unchanged, though some parts of the State reported damage due to high winds.
Hay cutting was still running behind schedule compared to previous years. Some livestock producers reported being short of hay due to the late first cutting and wet pasture conditions.
Other activities for the week included side dressing corn, spraying for weeds, and spring tillage.
