City Commission Approves Road Projects

(STURGIS) – Some road projects are moving forward around the City of Sturgis.

Wednesday night, Sturgis City Engineer Barry Cox presented the project bids for the 2014 enhanced mill and resurface tasks to the City Commissioners.

The project areas are South Clay from U.S. 12 to West South Street; East Hatch from North Lakeview to North Franks; South Lakeview from Mechanic to Merribe; West Congress from South Nottawa to South Clay; East Congress from South Nottawa to South Monroe and Griffith from North Lakeview to Ilene.

Cox said four bids were sent to the City and it was the recommendation of Fleis & Vandenbrink Engineering that the City hire Niblock Excavating of Bristol, Indiana, who submitted the low bid of just over $1 million. That was slightly higher than engineer estimates of $999,710.

The Commissioneers voted 8-1 to hire Niblock to do the work. Commissioner Mike Gay cast the lone no vote.

Cox also presented the North Centreville Road reconstruction project and the bid recommendation. ...... {LISTEN}.

That bid is below engineer's estimates of $858,355.

The Commission approved the recommendation by a unanimous vote.
