SMS Freezer Issue Discussed With School Board
Tuesday Aug 12, 2014 5:50pm
Sturgis, MI

By: Mike Stiles

(STURGIS) – Sturgis Public Schools are considering doing a freezer expansion project on their own.

The Sturgis Board of Education heard an update during their meeting Monday on the freezer issues at the Sturgis Middle School Building. Food Service Director Patty Miller explains what she would like to see done to the current freezer and cooler area. ...... {LISTEN}.

Miller says this will give the Middle School a side by side walk in cooler. In addition, Miller says the design would also create an external door for the walk in freezer that would allow deliveries to be made without people having to go through the school building.

With this being the newest building in the school district, some Board members wondered if there was a poor design from the beginning. Miller said it was due to increased enrollment and demands at the Middle School.

Miller along with Finance Director Vicki Watson; Transportation and Facilities Director Dan Root and Director of Special Projects Craig Casault worked together to create a bid package. However, no bids were sent to the school.

Root says that led the group to look at doing the work in house. ...... {LISTEN}.

Root says as the group looked closer at undertaking the project, they came up with a rough cost of approximately $50,000.

The Board said they would like to see a better break down of the project and costs before approving it. The matter will be brought back during a future meeting.
