Sturgis, MI

By: Mike Stiles

(STURGIS) – If the 2014-2015 City of Sturgis budget is accurate, revenues would be less than expenditures.

Sturgis City Manager Mike Hughes presented the proposed budget during Wednesday’s City Commission meeting, saying that the millage rate will stay the same for the City in the upcoming year. ...... {LISTEN}.

Hughes says the General Fund will take a bit of a hit in the next budget year. ...... {LISTEN}.

Employee costs continue to be the largest part of the budget every year, between wages and benefits for current workers and pensions for retired individuals. Hughes says the City has done a great job of trying to control these costs by not replacing every employee if they retire or should leave their positions.

Since 2006, the city has gone from 162 full-time employees to 120. In addition, Hughes says some former employer costs have been shifted to employees over the years, helping the City as well.

The Commission unanimously approved the proposed budget.
