The City of Angola and Steuben County via an Agreement with the Indiana Department of Transportation have partnered on a Traffic Signal Preemption Project.
The Angola Police Department, the Angola Fire Department, the Steuben County EMS, and the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department are the participating agencies and up to sixty-six (66) emergency vehicles will have traffic signal preemptors installed in the Vehicles. Traffic signal preemption equipment has been installed at fifteen (15) intersections. They are:
US 20 & I-69 west ramp US 20 & I-69 east ramp US 20 (W. Maumee) & Gerald Lett Avenue (CR 200W) US 20 (E. Maumee) & Williams St. US 20 (E. Maumee) & John McBride Ave (CR 100E) SR 127N (N. Wayne) & Mill St. SR 127N (N. Wayne) & Bickland Dr. (McDonald’s/Rural King) SR 127N (N. Wayne) & Harcourt Rd. (CR 100N) SR 127N (N. Wayne) & Angola Square (Walgreens/Dunham’s Sports) SR 127N (N. Wayne) & Eyster Dr. (Menard’s) Harcourt Rd. & Wohlert St. CR 200W & CR 200N
According to Angola City Engineer Bill Boyer when the emergency vehicle’s lights and sirens are activated they emit a signal that is picked up by the traffic signal controllers and the controllers begin the process to have the signal green for the emergency vehicle(s).
Boyer says there are white lights installed near the traffic signal heads at each intersection. In addition there is a light facing every direction, which are called confirmation beacons.
Emergency vehicles can be responding to the same call from different directions.
Boyer said priorities are assigned to the emergency vehicles such as Fire-Rescue, EMS, and Police. The confirmation beacons are signals to the responding emergency vehicles.
The confirmation beacons can be a steady burning white light or a flashing white light. When you see an active confirmation beacon, whether it is a steady white light or a flashing white light-it means emergency vehicles are approaching that intersection and possibly from more than one direction-so be alert and obey the traffic signal.
The traffic signal preemptors have been installed in the Fire and EMS vehicles. Boyer says installation in the Police Vehicles will start soon.
