Judge: Indiana must recognize other states' marriages
Wednesday Aug 20, 2014 6:42am

INDIANAPOLIS -- A Federal judge ruled yesterday that Indiana must recognize same-sex marriages solemnized in other states.

U.S. District Court Judge Richard Young, who earlier this summer struck down Indiana's ban on same-sex marriages, ruled that it is unconstitutional for Indiana to deny married status to gay and lesbian couples legally married in other states.

The ruling will have no immediate effect because it will not be enforced until after the U.S. Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals decides whether Indiana and Wisconsin's bans on same-sex marriage should remain unconstitutional.

Oral arguments in that case will be held in Chicago next Tuesday.
