Portion of Indiana State Road 5 to Close
Friday May 19, 2017 1:08pm
Shipshewana, IN

Motorists who travel State Road 5 in LaGrange County will have a detour to deal with this summer.

The Indiana Department of Transportation will close the highway between County Roads 300 South and 400 South.

The closure is so crews can widen the east shoulder of the road just north of Archbold Equipment Company where it narrows due to a ditch.

That spot is a danger especially for Amish buggies that have to pull into the northbound lane due to guard rails that replace the shoulder.

LaGrange County rerouted the ditch to the east and INDOT plans to extend the buggy lane. But that will require lots of fill dirt to be hauled in, and County Surveyor Rex Pranger told commissioners that likely the reason for the closure.

Pranger said INDOT expects to close the highway around July 10th and keep it closed for up to 35 days.

The posted detour will be U-S-6 to State Road 9 to U-S 20 and then back to State Road 5 at Shipshewana. But county officials expect to see lots of motorists attempting to drive around the closure, and many of the county roads in that area are gravel.
