Local Man Receives High School Diploma After 61 Years

A Steuben County woman jumps through hoops and hurdles, all to get her father his diploma.

Jerry Miller, who was apart of the Class of 1956 at the now closed Fort Wayne Central High School, joined the Navy when he was 17. He was shipped out to help clean-up efforts in the Korean War just months before he finished high school.

He was told that because he was in the service, he would be able to receive his diploma when he returned home. But his high school principal had other plans.

When Miller’s daughter, Toni Moon, a graduate from Prairie Heights High School, was told the story of how her father never received a diploma, she made it her mission to give her father that certificate.

Using her resources as an Angola Schools employee, she was able to track down some information through the Fort Wayne school district.

Although they couldn’t get her a diploma, they were able to locate his transcripts. Her next move? Find a company that would print an official diploma. So she called Josten’s, a company that specializes in graduation products. Luckily, they were able to print and mail Moon an official high school diploma.

Moon says that she and her family gathered with her father on Monday evening to celebrate his 79th birthday, where Moon says she gave him the diploma.

Moon says that the normal cost of a diploma from Jostens is typically around 35 dollars, but the company gifted the family the diploma.

Because Miller was in the service, he was able to take an high school equivalency test that he passed. It was when he took in his test results to the principal, that the principal ripped up his diploma...a diploma that he now has in his.
