LOHUT Passes in a 5-2 Vote by Steuben County Council
Tuesday Jun 13, 2017 6:00pm
Steuben County Council • Angola, IN

By: Sheila McCrea and Tanner Holbrook

If you "have wheels" and are paying Steuben County taxes, you will be digging a little bit deeper in your pockets.

Tuesday morning the Steuben County Council members had their 3rd and final reading of both LOHUT Ordinances. The rates established and approved in April and re-read in May remained unchanged. In both ordinances, council members Rick Shipe, Linda Hansen, Dan Caruso, Ruth Beer and Ken Shelton voted yes while Jim Getz and Wil Howard voted no.

At one point, Councilman Ken Shelton made a motion to change Ordinance #899 to a flat fee of $45 for passenger and other light vehicles; however, his motion died after much back forth of amending his original motion. Ordinance #899 will charge people 20 percent of their state vehicle excise tax or a minimum of $25.

Ordinance #900 was passed without any debate. Ordinance #900, which deals with fees for bigger vehicles, will charge a flat rate of $80 per vehicle greater than 11,001 pounds and trailers with the exception of trailers 3,000 pounds and under, which will charged a $15 fee.

You will still have time to make an adjustment in your budget to pay for these new taxes, as it will not be collected until 2018.

Because vehicle registrations are paid alphabetically over the course of the year. That means that the revenue generated from the tax won’t be available for use until 2019. For the taxes to be collected starting in 2018, they must receive final approval before July 1.
