Health Officials Warn About Mosquitoes
Monday Jun 19, 2017 12:32pm

By: Tanner Holbrook

As of June 14th, two cases of the West Nile Virus have been documented in Indiana, one in Hamilton County and one in Lake County. Mosquitoes in Morgan and Tippecanoe counties have also tested positive for the virus. The Indiana State Department of Health says they expect to see increased West Nile activity throughout the state. The department recommends that you should avoid being outdoors when mosquitoes are active, apply EPA-registered insect repellent to clothing and exposed skin, try to cover exposed skin with a hand, long sleeves and pants, and install or repair screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out of the house.

The department also says that mosquitoes breed in standing water, and says to throw away old tires, tin cans and ceramic posts, repair failed septic systems, keep grass cut short and shrubbery trimmed, frequently replace water in pet bowls, and aerate ornamental pools, or stock them with predatory fish.
