Trine Expecting Boom in Main Campus Enrollment

Trine University is expecting a sizeable increase in the number of students enrolled at its main campus this fall, with new student enrollment fueling growth.

The university is estimating an overall headcount on its main campus of 4,060 students - including returning, new, undergraduate and graduate students - up 8.8 percent from 3,730 in the fall of 2016.

"We are excited by the growth our student body is experiencing as an increasing number of students become aware of the quality education offered at Trine University. We look forward to welcoming this larger group of students and already have plans in place to ensure the high standard of their Trine experience is maintained," said Earl D. Brooks II, Ph.D., Trine president.

Trine's freshman class will set records, with an estimated 615 new freshmen expected, up 19 percent from 461 last year. Freshman and transfer new student enrollment is estimated at 710, a 37 percent increase over last year's 518.

The university's new hockey programs are helping fuel the enrollment gains by bringing new students to campus. Trine is also seeing growth in many of its academic programs, including exercise science, which offers graduates the option of entry to its Doctor of Physical Therapy program, as well as its biochemistry, biomedical engineering, business, criminal justice and education majors.

High school dual enrollment on the main campus is expected to rise 23 percent to 1,950, up from 1,587 last year. Dual enrollment provides many college-bound students the opportunity to take college-level courses in their high schools, on campus and online for credit toward college.

Trine University's new Thunder Ice Arena is nearly complete and will open to the public Sept. 5. The facility will serve as the home for Trine's men's and women's hockey teams. It also will host club and youth hockey programs, and will be open to the public for skating at designated times.

Construction continues on the MTI Center, which is expected to open in January. The MTI Center will host Trine's men's and women's basketball teams, include a six-lane bowling alley and esports center and serve as a venue for entertainers.
