LaGrange Officials Hear of Relief Effort for Lagrange, TX

LaGrange County Commissioners started their meeting talking about another Lagrange nearly 13-hundred miles away.

Representatives from Lakeland Schools told commissioners about their project to raise funds for LaGrange, Texas, which suffered severe flooding from Hurricane Harvey.

Students are raising funds and will participate in a program this Friday at 2 p-m. Their goal is to raise $20-thousand dollars.

The district has a phone call scheduled today with a pastor in the Texas community and local LaGrange Church of God Pastor Ben Stuckey, who went through Hurricane Katrina.

"I saw what happened was a lot of people ran down as fast as they could to help and then were turned away because you can't assess what you really need. Especially once those cameras are gone. When that happens, that's when you lose the emotion, you lose everything else, and truly what they need is money. They're afraid to ask for that," said Stuckey.

He told commissioners the county has an opportunity to help more effectively by involving the entire community.

"I think this is a great opportunity with them to draw the county -- not just Lagrange -- but to draw the county together. Starting off with monetary gifts is a great way to do that. I mean, we could do this over a systematic period. I don't want to say 'adopt', I mean that's almost offensive, but become a partner, a strategic partner, with Lagrange, Texas."

Commissioner President Larry Miller noted that Westview Schools began placing collection boxes in that area.

Lakeland will accept monetary contributions during the Lakeland-Garrett football game.

A meeting organized by the City of LaGrange, Texas drew hundreds of residents affected by flooding to Casino Hall last night.

According to an online story by the Fayette County Record, housing is the most immediate need.

Many of the homes damaged were in mobile home parks, and City Manager Shawn Raborn told the group the future of those neighborhoods is in question. He said FEMA is not likely to invest back into the floodplain.

The city is developing an inventory of available housing in the area.
