A man accused of shooting two people in two different counties in one night has been found guilty of one of the crimes.

According to WWMT, 32 year old Zachary Patten of Portage was found guilty Monday of first-degree premeditated murder in the shooting death of 31 year old Graciela Portillo-Esparza. Patten was also convicted of illegally carrying a concealed weapon and felony firearms.

Portillo-Esparza was shot by Patten on July 20, 2017 at the Americana Estates Mobile Home Park in Kalamazoo after she got between Patten and her brother while the two men were arguing. She died at the scene. Patten was there to confront Esparza's brother, who was dating Patten's ex-girlfriend.

From Kalamazoo, Patten drove to his ex-wife's house on Featherstone Road in Florence Township. He entered the home and shot 29 year old Shane Richardson, his ex-wife's husband, in the neck. Richardson was taken to Three Rivers Health were he died.

Patten was arrested the next day in South Bend, Indiana when he surrendered to police.

He will be sentenced in Kalamazoo on March 19. Patten is still awaiting trial in St. Joseph County for Richardson's murder.
