Bronson High School senior Kiana Mayer has received a special award.

Mayer has been named the Wendy's High School Heisman State Winner for Michigan. The award was created in 1994 by Wendy's founder Dave Thomas, after he went back to high school at 61 years of age to receive his General Equivalency Diploma. It honors students for their work in the classroom, in their athletic endeavors and in the community.

Bronson High School Counselor Alanna Denton says Kiana is the first student from Bronson to make it to the State Finalist round.

As a State Winner, Kiana will receive a $1,000 scholarship, a silver medal, a Wendy's High School Heisman State Winner patch and a $50 Wendy's gift card. In addition, the State winners move on for the chance to become a National Finalist, where they could earn a $5,000 scholarship and a trip to the Heisman Weekend in New York City.

National Finalists will be announced starting the week of November 6
