FORT WAYNE – A LaOtto man arrested in connection with a Noble County shooting incident is now behind bars.

Indiana State Police say 40 year old Justin Weikel was transferred from Parkview Regional Medical Center on Saturday to the Allen County Jail. He is being detained on an outstanding Noble County arrest warrant, which is unrelated to the police shooting incident.

Indiana State Police shortly after 11:30 PM Wednesday the Fort Wayne Police Department attempted to stop a car for reckless driving. The driver, Weikel, came to a stop, but sped away as the officer was walking to his vehicle. The pursuit went through Northern Allen, DeKalb and Noble Counties. The Noble and DeKalb County Sheriff's Departments and the Indiana State Police joined in, and the chase eventually came to an end at 12:15 AM when Weikel stopped on Waits Road near Main Street at the Johnson Mobile Home Park, south of Kendallville.

Weikel refused to get out of the vehicle and began to shoot at the police. Officers returned fire and set up a perimeter around the automobile. SWAT Officers from the Fort Wayne Police and the Indiana State Police were called to the scene. At 1:45 AM, SWAT officers were able to take Weikel into custody. He was treated at the scene by paramedics and then transported to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne.

This remains an ongoing criminal investigation. Once it is completed, information will be turned over to the Noble County Prosecutor for review and a determination if criminal charges will be filed.
