City Commission Approves Marijuana Ordinance Amendments
By: Mike Stiles - Thursday, April 29, 2021

STURGIS – The Sturgis City Commission has approved two amendments to their marijuana ordinances.

During Wednesday's meeting, Sturgis City Manager Mike Hughes presented a second reading of the amendment changes. The first amendment deals with stacked permits, splitting them into minor and major categories and the fees associated with processing the applications.

The first amendment deals with breaking the stacked permits into major and minor categories. It also allowed for the City to charge $500 for application document review and another $500 for stacked permit application fee. Major permits would be charged the $500 application document review fee, and a $2,500 stacked permit application fee.

The second amendment to the ordinance dealt with permit extensions. City staff is recommending a change to allow for a six month extension on permits that have been issued, but may not have met all the stipulations on the permit. Some of those stipulations may include meeting license qualifications from the State; obtaining occupancy of the permitted premises; and receiving final license approval from the State.

The amendments will go into effect on May 21.
