Motorcyclist Severs Leg in Three Vehicle Accident Near Fremont
By: Sheila McCrea - Wednesday, July 21, 2021

FREMONT, IN – A Fremont man lost a portion of his leg when his motorcycle was sideswiped late Tuesday afternoon following a three vehicle crash.

The Steuben County Sheriff’s Department says the crash happened just before 4:30 p.m. in the area of County Road 125 East. Investigators determined a Harley Davidson motorcycle being operated by Cody J. Ormsbee, age 28, was trying to turn left onto 125 East from 120 when he was sideswiped by a 2018 Dodge Journey that was being driven by Ericka J. Pillitiere, age 32 of Fremont.

Pillitiere told deputies she never saw the motorcycle.

Ormsbee was ejected off the motorcycle and landed on the road. The motorcycle was pushed into the westbound lane of 120 where it was struck by a 2014 Hyundai Elantra being driven by Paul J Federspiel of Fort Wayne.

The Sheriff’s Department says as a result of the crash, Ormsbee’s right leg was severed just below the knee. He was reportedly able to stand up and hobble off the road towards another vehicle. A “good Samaritan”, who happened to be a nurse, was driving the vehicle. She applied a tourniquet to Ormsbee’s leg to stop the bleeding.

Ormsbee was flown to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne via the Samaritan Helicopter where at last report he was in stable condition.

Pillitiere and Federspiel were not injured in the crash.

The accident forced a portion of State Road 120 west of Fremont to be shut down for over two hours on Tuesday.

The incident remains under investigation.

Assisting the Steuben County Sheriffs Department at the scene were the Fremont Police Department, Steuben County EMS, Fremont Fire/Rescue, the Angola Police, Samaritan Helicopter, Steuben County Communications, and the Indiana Department of Transportation.
