By: Sheila McCrea - Thursday, September 8, 2022

QUINCY, MI - Quincy firefighters were called away from a training drill at their firehouse to attend to an apartment fire.

Just before 7 PM Wednesday, fire crews from Quincy were alerted to a fire in an apartment building at 47 West Chicago Street.

First units arrived on the scene arrived within three minutes of the alarm to find a single story multi-family dwelling with smoke showing.

Crews forced the apartment door and quickly found a lone occupant surrounded by thick smoke from the blaze. The occupant was moved to safety where crews started CPR. The patient regained a pulse and began to breathe on their own.

The fire was quickly knocked down and contained to the apartment of origin.

US-12 was ordered to be closed for the duration of the fire as supply hoses were stretched across the roadway.

The patient was taken to Promedica Hospital Coldwater, via Lifecare Ambulance, and later flown to Kalamazoo for further treatment.

Although the cause of the fire is believed to be accidental in nature, the incident remains under investigation.

The Quincy Fire Department had assistance provided by the Quincy Police Department and the Coldwater Fire Marshal. Also responding on the alarm was the Coldwater Fire Department, Michigan State Police, Lifecare Ambulance, Branch County Victim Services, The Red Cross, and Consumers Energy.
