LaGrange County Commission Raises Buggy Plate Fees
By: Mike Stiles - Wednesday, January 18, 2023

LAGRANGE, IN – Prices are going up for license plates on Amish buggies in LaGrange County.

During their meeting this week, the LaGrange County Commission voted to increase the fee they charge for licenses on Amish buggies from $200 a year to $300 a year. The cost will go up $10 annually over the next ten years.

Money from the increase will go to help with road projects around the County.

Buggy plates have been a requirement in LaGrange County for several years. However, the fees for those plates have been very inexpensive. In addition, the Commission says buggy traffic is hard on paved roads. Over time, the buggy wheels create a trough in the middle of each traffic lane.

Under law, all horse drawn buggies that operate on a local road or highway has to have a license plate. The licenses must be purchased between March 1 and May 15 of each year. If a license is purchased after the May 15 deadline, there will be a late fee. Licenses for buggies are unique to that buggy and can not be transferred to another buggy.
