OTSEGO TOWNSHIP - A Butler man died following an accident on Thursday, November 16 in rural Steuben County.

The Steuben County Sheriff's Department stated just before 9 p.m., sheriff's deputies responded to the area of S.R. 1 south of Metz Road on a report of a single vehicle rollover crash that had occurred.

Initial reports also indicated that a person had been ejected from the vehicle.

When Sheriff's deputies arrived along with the Angola Police Department, a red Chevy Silverado pickup truck was located off of the east side of S.R. 1 near a curve in the in 2300 block.

Adjacent to the vehicle was a male crash victim lying face down on the ground.

Sheriff's deputies and Angola Police checked the victim and found him unresponsive.

Lifesaving efforts were then started and continued until the Steuben County EMS personnel arrived and determined that the victim could not be resuscitated and was pronounced deceased.

A preliminary crash investigation determined that a red 2006 Chevy Silverado pickup truck driven by Daniel Thomas McKean, 26, of Butler was traveling northbound on SR 1 when McKean failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway due to excessive speed.

McKean's vehicle began to slide out of control leaving the east side of the roadway and overturning.

He was ejected from the vehicle during the crash and died as a result of blunt force trauma.

The weather was clear and roadway was dry at the time of the crash.

Evidence at the scene did indicate that alcohol may have been a factor in the crash and seatbelts were not in use.

The crash still remains under investigation by the Sheriff's Office.

Assisting the Sheriff's Office at the scene were Angola Police, Indiana State Police, Steuben County EMS, Steuben County Coroner's Office, and the Law Enforcement Division of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
