(STEUBEN COUNTY) – Alcohol is believed to be a factor in a two vehicle crash that happened in Northeast Indiana.

Steuben County Sheriff Rodney Robinson says deputies were called out at 11:16 PM Saturday to County Road 400 West north of County Road 675 South for an accident. When they arrived, deputies found what appeared to be a head on crash with two people trapped in the vehicles.

During the investigation, deputies determined the 33 year old Mariano Diaz of Pleasant Lake was driving south on County Road 400 West, while 24 year old Luke Newman of Pleasant Lake was driving his vehicle north. It’s believed that Diaz went left of center and collided with Newman’s vehicle.

Newman was taken to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne with lower leg injuries.

Diaz was pinned in his vehicle and had to be removed by Steuben Township Fire and Rescue. He was then taken to Parkview Regional Medical Center with leg injuries.

Deputies say 26 year old Galindo Diaz of Pleasant Lake was a front seat passenger in the Mariano Diaz vehicle, and was able to get out of the vehicle under their own power. Galindo Diaz was taken to Parkview Regional Medical center with an arm injury.

It’s believed Mariana Diaz was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash, which remains under the investigation of the Steuben County Fatal Alcohol Crash Team. Assisting at the scene were the Angola Police Department, the Ashley-Hudson Police Department, Indiana State Police, the Ashley-Hudson Fire Rescue along with Steuben County EMA and Parkview DeKalb EMS.
