(HILLSDALE COUNTY) – A Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Deputy and the man who shot him are both dead following an incident Thursday afternoon.

Michigan State Police say the incident started Thursday afternoon when the deputy made a traffic stop in the area of Beecher and Lamb Roads, just southeast of Hillsdale. The suspect in the shooting, Eric Fiddler, ran away from the scene.

The deputy was taken to an area hospital, and later died from his wounds.

Michigan State Police and other law enforcement agencies used K-9 officers, aviation and ES teams to search the area and finally found Fiddler around 6:15 PM in the area of Culbert and Osseo Roads.

Troopers say Fiddler was ordered to surrender. He produced a weapon and fired at troopers who returned fire and struck Fiddler, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators say Fiddler was wanted on multiple warrants.

The name of the fallen deputy has not been released, pending notification of his family. The matter remains under investigation.
