(CORUNNA) – Indiana State Police are investigating a crash that killed one person and injured another.

Troopers were called to a vehicle crash on State Road 327, north of County Road 32 at 12:35 AM Saturday. The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office was first to the scene and found a passenger vehicle that crashed into a fence and was on fire. They also found 19 year old Leo Montoya of Orland walking near the crash with a head injury and burns. It’s believed that he was the driver of the vehicle.

As the fire was put out, authorities found a passenger in the vehicle who was dead. The name of the individual has not been released, pending an investigation by the DeKalb County Coroner.

The preliminary investigation shows that the vehicle was traveling south on County Road 327, when it veered off the west edge of the road, overcorrected, crossed into the east ditch, striking a utility pole, a sign, a tree and a wooden fence before stopping and bursting into flames.

It’s believed speed and alcohol are contributing factors in the
crash, which is still under investigation.

Montoya was treated at the scene by DeKalb Parkview EMS and was then transported to a Fort Wayne area hospital.

Also assisting at the scene were the Auburn Police Department and the Corunna Fire Department.
