(CORUNNA) – Authorities have released the name of a person killed in a September 7 crash in DeKalb County.
The Indiana State Police say the individual is 50 year old Betty Mott of Garrett.
At 12:35 AM on September 7, Troopers were called to a vehicle crash on State Road 327, north of County Road 32. The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office was first to the scene and found a passenger vehicle that crashed into a fence and was on fire. They also found 19 year old Leo Montoya of Orland walking near the crash with a head injury and burns. It’s believed that he was the driver of the vehicle.
As the fire was put out, authorities found a passenger, Mott, who was in the vehicle and was dead.
The preliminary investigation shows that the vehicle was traveling south on County Road 327, when it veered off the west edge of the road, overcorrected, crossed into the east ditch, striking a utility pole, a sign, a tree and a wooden fence before stopping and bursting into flames.
Montoya was treated at the scene by DeKalb Parkview EMS, and was then transported to a Fort Wayne area hospital.
It’s believed speed and alcohol are contributing factors in the crash.
This is an active death investigation. Once the investigation is completed, a full report will be turned over to the DeKalb County Prosecutor for review and determination if any criminal charges are warranted.
