(NEWBURY TOWNSHIP) – A five vehicle accident sent two people to the hospital.

LaGrange County Chief Deputy Sheriff Juan Arroyo says just after 12 PM Thursday a semi driven by 65 year old Michael Nichols of Montpelier, Ohio was heading east on U.S. 20 near County Road 1150 West. Nichols told deputies that he did not see a pick up stopped in traffic and he rear ended the vehicle, which was driven by 40 year old Gustavo Nieves of Topeka, Indiana.

The force of the collision caused the pick up to strike a Ford Mustang that was in front of it. The Mustang was driven by 35 year old Brittaney Conrad of Elkhart. The car was pushed underneath a box truck, driven by 56 year old Robert Windmiller of Elkhart. The box truck was then pushed into the rear end of another semi and trailer, driven by 30 year old Alejandro Coronel of Skokie, Illinois.

Conrad was trapped in her vehicle and was removed by the Shipshewana Fire Department. She was then flown to Parkview Regional Medical Center.

A passenger in the Nieves vehicle, 54 year old Earl Yoder of Millersburg, was taken by ambulance to Parkview LaGrange Hospital with shoulder pain.

Investigators say Nieves and his passenger Yoder were not wearing their safety belts at the time of the accident. All of the other drivers had their safety belts on.

Also assisting at the scene were the Indiana State Police.
