(ANGOLA) - As tax season approaches, Trine University is once again offering free tax preparation help for residents who may not be able to afford professional services.

Starting January 26, trained volunteers at Trine University will prepare and file taxes at no cost through the federal Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, known as VITA. The service is aimed at people earning $70,000 or less, those with disabilities, and taxpayers with limited English proficiency.

Tax help will be available Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. through April 15 at Ford Hall on Trine's campus. The site will be closed during the university's spring break, March 2 through March 6.

Returns will be prepared by IRS-certified Trine accounting students working under faculty supervision. Spanish translation services will be available.

Organizers say the program helps community members avoid filing fees while giving students hands-on experience before entering the workforce.

Those using the service must bring Social Security cards for everyone listed on the return, a government-issued photo ID, tax documents such as W-2s or 1099s, and bank information for direct deposit refunds. The IRS no longer issues paper refund checks. Indiana filers should also bring records of rent or property taxes paid.

Appointments are required. More information is available by emailing TrineVITA@trine.edu or calling 260-665-4368.
