(INDIANAPOLIS) - A new Indiana law will change how electric bills are calculated, aiming to make monthly costs more predictable.

Under House Enrolled Act 1002, utilities are required to place residential customers on a levelized billing plan, which spreads energy costs over time to reduce sharp increases during extreme weather.

Levelized billing averages usage over a 12-month period to create more consistent monthly payments.

Customers will have the option to opt out of the program and continue with traditional billing.

The law also includes additional provisions focused on affordability, including assistance programs for low-income customers and changes to how utility rates are reviewed.
