Change A Child's Story: No Special Background Required- Northeastern Indiana CASA 5/19/26

By: Andy St. John • May 19, 2026

Following a highly successful "CASA Palooza" fundraiser that raised over $42,000, Kristi Bachman joins WLKI's Andy St. John to discuss the vital work of Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) in Northeastern Indiana. Serving Steuben, Noble, LaGrange, and Whitley counties, CASA trains dedicated volunteers to step into the shoes of vulnerable children and advocate for their safety and permanence within the court system.

Kristi breaks down the impact CASA has made on hundreds of local youth this year, the screening and mentorship process for new volunteers, and why you don't need a specialized background to completely change a child's story.

  • The Mission: CASA volunteers act as the independent voice for children experiencing abuse or neglect, reporting directly to the court regarding the child's best interests.
  • No Waiting List: While 230 children have been served so far this year, the program currently has no waiting list--but volunteer needs fluctuate rapidly.
  • Built-in Support: New advocates undergo thorough background screening and a 30-day training process, paired with a robust mentorship program so they never have to navigate a case alone.
  • Anyone Can Help: From teachers and nurses to retirees, CASA seeks everyday citizens from all walks of life.
