(YODER) - New court documents are revealing more details in the fatal shooting of a woman Friday night in southwest Allen County.
Seventy-nine-year-old James R. Chelf is charged with murder in the death of his wife, 77-year-old Sandra Sue Chelf. He remains held without bond at the Allen County Jail.
According to investigators, Allen County Sheriff's deputies and Indiana State Police were called to the Woodlake Estates Mobile Home Park in Yoder around 10:15 Friday night after a neighbor reported Chelf came to their home and said he had shot his wife.
Court records say officers arrived and took Chelf into custody outside the home. When asked if anyone else was inside, Chelf allegedly responded, "Just my dog and my dead wife."
Police say officers entered the trailer and found Sandra Chelf suffering from gunshot wounds to the head and torso. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators say a neighbor told police Chelf approached him outside, asked him to call 911 and said he had shot his wife before walking away.
During questioning, court documents say Chelf admitted shooting his wife during an argument but told investigators he could not remember what the argument was about. Police say Chelf repeatedly apologized and told investigators he "lost my mind" and "just went nuts."
According to court records, Chelf told officers the revolver used in the shooting was sitting on the dining room table. Investigators later recovered a .38 caliber Smith and Wesson revolver containing three spent shell casings, two live rounds and one empty chamber.
