(ROME CITY) - The Rome City community is mourning the loss of a 9-year-old boy who died days after being involved in a bicycle crash near his home.

Tucker Kerzman was injured last week in a crash at the corner of Jackson Street and Grove Street, according to the Orange Township Fire Department. Officials said Tucker rode his bicycle into a vehicle and was hospitalized following the crash.

Family, friends and community members had hoped Tucker would recover, but officials said he suffered a medical emergency and died Sunday.

A candlelight vigil was held Monday night at Rome City Elementary School as residents gathered to remember the young boy and support his family.

Community leaders organized the vigil to give residents an opportunity to come together and support one another following the tragedy.

A bicycle safety event is also planned for July 18 at Gordon's Camp Ground in Wolcottville. Organizers say bicycle helmets will be distributed to children as part of an effort to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
