Predicting Local Water Trends and Protecting Shared Ecosystems: The Steuben County Strategic Water Quality Monitoring Program 6/16/26

By: Andy St. John • June 16, 2026

Professor Sam Drerup, Ph.D., Dean of the Rinker-Ross School of Health Sciences at Trine University, joins host Andy St. John on WLKI 100.3 to discuss the critical efforts of the Steuben County Strategic Water Quality Monitoring Program.

Now entering its fourth year, the purpose of this vital study is to analyze long-term trends and changes in local water quality, generating a predictive dataset to help address environmental issues across Steuben County's highly water-dependent region. Dr. Drerup details the rigorous, labor-intensive fieldwork required to sample 17 to 18 distinct sites and explains how weather fluctuations impact ongoing data mapping. He also previews an upcoming deep-dive podcast series exploring the technical parameters of the initiative and highlights local volunteer opportunities.

This program is made possible through a cooperative partnership between the Steuben County Lakes Council, Steuben County Health Department, Steuben County Soil & Water Conservation District, City of Angola/Trine University MS4 Program, Trine University Biology Department, St. Joseph River Basin Commission, Michiana Area Council of Governments AmeriCorps Program and Steuben County Community Foundation.
