(LANSING) - Michigan officials are encouraging residents to watch for harmful algal blooms this summer and have launched a new online tool to make reporting suspected blooms easier.

Residents can now report possible harmful algal blooms by visiting Michigan.gov/HABs and submitting information and photos. Reports can also be made by calling 800-662-9278.

Harmful algal blooms, often called HABs, occur when blue-green algae grow rapidly in lakes, rivers and ponds. Blooms may appear as green streaks, foam or what looks like paint floating on the water's surface.

Some blooms can produce toxins that are harmful to people and animals.

Officials say swallowing contaminated water or breathing in water droplets can cause stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea and respiratory problems. Skin contact may result in rashes or irritation.

Pets, especially dogs, face significant risks from harmful algal blooms. Exposure can cause seizures and, in some cases, death. Pet owners are urged to keep animals away from water that appears scummy or discolored and to rinse them with fresh water immediately if contact occurs.

State officials say confirmed harmful algal blooms will be posted on a public map, but residents should always inspect water conditions before swimming, boating or allowing pets into the water.
