(AUBURN) - DeKalb County voters will be asked in November whether inland casino gambling should be permitted in the county.
The DeKalb County Election Board on Wednesday certified the public question for placement on the November 3 general election ballot.
Voters will be asked, "Shall inland casino gambling be permitted in DeKalb County?"
The same question will also appear on ballots in Steuben and Allen counties.
The referendum is required under House Enrolled Act 1038, which was signed into law by Governor Mike Braun and allows an inland casino to be located in Allen, DeKalb or Steuben County.
The law requires election boards in all three counties to place the question before voters. The Steuben County Election Board and Allen County Elections Board took similar action earlier this month.
The DeKalb County referendum will appear on the ballot even though county officials have not held public discussions about a casino proposal.
According to the Indiana Election Division, each county election board must certify the question for the ballot by noon August 1. Because placement of the referendum is required by state law, the county election boards do not have the authority to reject it.
