ANGOLA, Ind. (WLKI)- Changes to Indiana law and state-mandated funding requirements could bring significant changes to how fire protection and first responder services are provided throughout Steuben County.

Mayor Dave Martin said the changes include new provisions involving expense compensation for volunteer firefighters, along with other funding-related requirements affecting fire departments and emergency services.

One of the first local changes will involve fire protection coverage in Jamestown Township. Under the new arrangement, the Fremont Fire Department will become responsible for providing fire protection and first responder services throughout the township.

The expanded service area will include Pokagon State Park and the Trine Recreation area.

Martin said the transition may also affect some homeowners' insurance rates, depending on how insurers classify the department providing fire protection service to a property.

The announcement did not outline a timetable for the Fremont Fire Department's expanded coverage or identify whether additional changes to service areas may follow elsewhere in Steuben County.

Martin said the City of Angola remains focused on maintaining service for the Angola Fire Department's primary coverage area as the county adjusts to the new requirements.

"As these and other possible changes unfold, the City of Angola is committed to ensuring that the Angola Fire Department continues to provide the very best fire protection and first responder services to our primary service area," Martin said.

Local officials expect additional discussion as fire departments, townships and communities evaluate the effects of the state changes on emergency response services across the county.
