MSD of Steuben County Board of Trustees Being Sued by Angola Teachers Association
Wednesday, July 17, 2019

The MSD Board of School Trustees learned of a law suit against
the School Board and Corporation from the Angola Teachers Association on
Tuesday evening. Assistant Superintendent Ann Rice notified the board that the Angola Classroom Teachers Association has filed unfair labor practice suits against the School Corporation and against the School Board in regards to negotiations during board meetings, with further information to come before the board in the coming months. The association is seeking $5,000 for each incident that the suite covers.

The board also approved the first reading of Board Policy #4111 for a new
requirement in regards to Criminal History Checks. State statute now
requires expanded criminal history checks on volunteer coaching positions at the high school level for any association sanctioned sport.

The board concluded by approving a second policy for Teacher Appreciation
Grants. It is required by the state to release minimum guidelines for teacher appreciation grant distribution. Highly effective teachers receive 25% more than effective teachers, and the grant must be renewed annually.

The MSD Board of School Trustees also approved a Secured School Safety Grant. The grant comes by way of the Indiana Department of Homeland Security and MSD can receive a matching grant of up to $100,000. The grant money goes towards the school resource officer salary.
