Furman And Bailey Sentenced In Branch County
Tuesday, August 27, 2019

Two people were sentenced Monday in Branch County Circuit Court for their part in a plan to kidnap, rape and kill a child selected at random.

Court personnel say 33 year old Talia Furman of Springfield and 37 year old
David Bailey of Coldwater both entered guilty pleas to charges of conspiracy to commit first degree criminal sexual conduct and conspiracy to commit kidnapping. Both were given sentences of 25 to 50 years which will run concurrently. By entering the guilty pleas, the Michigan Attorney General's Office dismissed a
charge of conspiracy to commit murder against both Furman and Bailey. They must also register as sex offenders and testify against their two codefendants.
Court officials say Furman's sentence will run concurrent to the sentence of 25
to 70 years she received in Calhoun County. She was sentenced after entering a plea of no contest to a charge of participating in the sexual abuse of a three month old baby. Bailey will not be eligible for parole.

20 year old Jayme LaPoint of Athens pled guilty July 29 to charges of conspiracy to kidnap and to first degree criminal sexual conduct. Prosecutors dropped a charge of conspiracy to commit murder against her. She is scheduled to be sentenced September 29, in addition to being sentenced in a separate case of first
degree criminal sexual conduct. She plead guilty to that charge in July as well.
A fourth defendant, Matthew Toole of Battle Creek, is scheduled to go to trial on
October 22.
