MASON TOWNSHIP – An Elkhart man was rescued from a burning automobile in Cass County's Mason Township.

Sheriff Richard Behnke says his department was called to a one vehicle crash at 6:55 Monday morning on Redfield Street near Maple Glen. Initial calls to Cass County Central Dispatch said a pick up had hit a tree and was on fire.

When Deputy Shields arrived, she found the driver, 57 year old Scott Stoneburner of Elkhart, trapped in the pickup and it was on fire. With assistance from Ontwa Township Officer Erickson, they were able to get Stoneburner out of the vehicle through a rear window. The officers then put out the fire.

The investigation determined that Stoneburner was having a medical issue and lost control of his pickup. No one was injured and Stoneburner was wearing his seat belt.

The Porter Township Fire Department and the SEPSA Ambulance assisted at the scene.
