BURR OAK, MI - Three people were airlifted after an accident late Friday afternoon.

The accident happened at around 4 PM Friday on U.S. 12, near Burr Oak Road, in Michigan’s St. Joseph County’s Burr Oak Township.

The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department says the investigation of the multiple-vehicle crash reveals a 16-year-old driver and 17-year-old passenger were driving west on U.S. 12 in a Chevy Silverado. The vehicle reportedly cross the centerline and struck a Buick Encore driven by 20-year-old Nayeli Delpaz-Arroyo.

Reports indicate the Silverado continued west and struck head on with a Nissan driven by Juan Nico-Ramirez. As a result, this rendered the vehicle disabled in the road when a second Chevy Silverado, traveling east, struck the original vehicle.

Both occupants of the first Silverado and Nino-Ramirez were airlifted to a Kalamazoo hospital in critical condition.

A passenger in the van was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

The occupants of the original vehicle are not being identified by police because of their ages.

The crash remains under investigation.

The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department was assisted at the scene by Aircare, Med flight, Mercy, Michigan State Police, Burr Oak Fire Department, Colon Fire Department, Tri-Township Fire Department and Chuck’s Towing.
