Bolt Explains Road Millage To City Commission

By: Mike Stiles

(STURGIS) – The Sturgis City Commission got an education on road conditions around St. Joseph County Wednesday night.

County Road Commission Manager Christopher Bolt shared with the Commission that he, his Board and the Road Commission employees are passionate about what they do and are frustrated that there’s not enough money coming in each year to do all the projects that need to be done.

Bolt says a certain amount is needed each year for the Road Commission to just do their regular tasks. ...... {LISTEN}.

Bolt says the Road Commission has looked at every option possible for more funding, and the only one left was for a millage proposal. It would ask for two mills and be for a ten year period.

Bolt explains if the millage passes, the Road Commission would keep a portion of the funds. ...... {LISTEN}.

The other mill would be given back to the townships and they would decide where the monies would be used.

Bolt says this is a bold move, but needed to get the roads up to standards. He says County residents deserve the roads to be kept up and this is the best way to do it.

The proposal will be on the August 5 primary ballot. In addition, the regular one mill renewal proposal will also be on the ballot.
