Tuesday Sep 12, 2017 5:13pm
LaGrange, IN

By: Sheila McCrea

Multiple fire units were called to a structure fire late Tuesday morning in downtown LaGrange. Units fought fire and smoke at multiple buildings on the corner of Detroit and Spring Streets.

LaGrange County dispatchers said around 10 a.m., a fire was reported in a series of three buildings housing a Family Dollar store, Gould Sports and an ethnic grocer, in the 100 block of North Detroit Street in downtown LaGrange. Pictures and video can be seen on our Facebook page that show smoke rising high from the structure.

As of 5 p.m. - The heaviest fire damage appears to be to the Family Dollar store that sets beside Gould Sports Inc. The Family Dollar building collapsed as a result of the fire, but the two other buildings a concern for crews.

The incident shut down at least 5-6 blocks in downtown LaGrange, north of the the 9 & 20 intersection.

A cause of the fire is not known. Information is limited, as it is an active scene.

Authorities ask that citezens avoid the area of the intersection of Spring and Detroit Street downtown LaGrange. Many roadways in that vicinity are blocked off, as crews remain on the scene.

Residents in the Town of Lagrange are asked to conserve water and a boil water advisory is in effect for the town. Both due to low water levels as they continue to fight a fire downtown. Also athletic events at Lakeland Schools are canceled due to the boil water advisory.
