By: Andy St. John • January 13, 2026

Gwen Hall from the Northeast Indiana Solid Waste Management District joins Andy St. John on WLKI 100.3 to kick off 2026 with a look at the incredible recycling milestones achieved over the past year.

The Northeast Indiana Solid Waste Management District serves LaGrange, Noble, Steuben, and DeKalb counties with a singular mission: to extend the life of our landfills. Gwen shares the staggering data from 2025, including the successful collection of 13 tons of household batteries, 57 tons of e-waste, and over 4,000 tons of general recyclables.

Key Highlights:

  • The Battery Challenge: Discover why hand-sorting and taping lithium batteries is a critical safety step in the recycling process.
  • From Monitors to Billboards: Learn how your old electronics are repurposed into the massive digital displays seen in places like Times Square.
  • By the Numbers: A breakdown of the thousands of tires and tons of plastic, glass, and cardboard diverted from local landfills.
  • Join the Team: The District is currently hiring for the 2026 season. Gwen outlines the part-time opportunities available at compost and recycling lots starting in April.
